The Aplocheilus myersi, commonly known as Myers' Killifish, is a small, surface-dwelling freshwater fish native to the slow-moving waters and rice paddies of Southeast Asia, particularly in Thailand and surrounding regions. Known for its stunning colors and ease of care, this species is a fantastic addition to peaceful community or species-only aquariums.

🐠 Appearance:

  • Size: Grows up to 2.5–3 inches (6–7.5 cm) in length.

  • Coloration: Features a sleek, elongated body with metallic green, gold, or blue iridescence, depending on the light.

  • Fins: Often displays orange or red hues on the edges of its dorsal, anal, and caudal fins, with subtle black markings.

  • Eyes: Large, reflective eyes that give it a charming, alert appearance.

🌿 Tank Requirements:

  • Tank Size: Minimum 15–20 gallons for a small group.

  • Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: 72–79°F (22–26°C)

    • pH: 6.5–7.5

    • Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard

  • Environment:

    • Prefers a well-planted tank with plenty of floating plants to create shade.

    • A tight-fitting lid is essential due to its jumping tendencies.

    • Needs slow water flow to mimic natural habitats.

🏡 Behavior & Compatibility:

  • Temperament: Peaceful but predatory, especially toward small invertebrates.

  • Tankmates: Best kept with small, peaceful fish such as tetras, rasboras, and peaceful bottom dwellers. Avoid keeping with very small shrimp or fry.

  • Social Behavior: Can be kept in pairs or small groups with 1 male to multiple females to prevent aggression.

🍤 Diet:

  • Carnivorous: Prefers live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, mosquito larvae, and bloodworms.

  • In Captivity: Will accept high-quality pellets and flakes, but a protein-rich diet brings out the best colors.

🧑‍🍼 Breeding:

  • Egg Layers: Lays eggs on fine-leafed plants or spawning mops.

  • Incubation Period: Eggs hatch in 10–14 days depending on temperature.

  • Fry Care: Fry should be fed with infusoria or baby brine shrimp.

The Aplocheilus myersi Killifish is ideal for aquarists seeking a colorful, surface-dwelling fish with interesting behavior and minimal care requirements. Its iridescent beauty and calm demeanor make it a standout in peaceful community tanks.
