DESCRIPTION OF ITEM:

Green Cory Catfish (Corydoras aeneus) is a peaceful and hardy species of bottom-dwelling freshwater fish that is popular in community aquariums due to its calm demeanor and attractive appearance. Known for its unique greenish coloration, this Corydoras species offers a bit of variety compared to the more commonly seen varieties like the Albino Corydoras or Bronze Corydoras. Native to the rivers and streams of South America, particularly in countries like Brazil, Green Cory Catfish are a great choice for aquarists of all experience levels due to their easy care requirements and sociable nature.

Physical Characteristics:
Coloration: The Green Cory Catfish has a light green to olive-green body with a subtle sheen that can look more vibrant when the fish is in good health and under proper lighting. Its body is covered with tiny, smooth scales that give it a somewhat reflective quality. The fish often has a slightly darker green or brownish hue along the back, while its underside is usually lighter. The fins are transparent with a slight tinge of green, enhancing its overall aesthetic.
Size: Green Cory Catfish grow to a modest size, typically reaching about 2.5 inches (6.5 cm) in length. This makes them ideal for small to medium-sized aquariums.
Shape: Like all Corydoras species, the Green Cory Catfish has a short, robust body that is equipped with protective armor-like bony plates. Its flat, wide belly is characteristic of bottom-dwelling fish, and it has barbels (whisker-like appendages) around its mouth, which help it forage through the substrate for food.

Behavior:
Temperament: Green Cory Catfish are peaceful, non-aggressive fish that get along well with other small, non-aggressive species. They are highly social and thrive in groups of at least 3 to 6 individuals, often seen swimming in a school. Their friendly disposition and bottom-dwelling behavior make them excellent tankmates for other peaceful species, including tetras, guppies, rasboras, and other small catfish. These fish are not territorial and will peacefully coexist with other species in a community tank.
Activity Level: Though generally calm, Green Cory Catfish are active bottom feeders and can often be seen scavenging through the substrate for leftover food. They are not particularly fast swimmers but do enjoy moving around the tank in groups, rummaging for food and interacting with their fellow Corydoras. They are most active during feeding times.

Habitat and Tank Requirements:
Water Conditions: Green Cory Catfish are adaptable to a range of water conditions, though they do best in slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5. The ideal temperature range for these fish is between 72°F to 78°F (22°C to 26°C). While they are hardy, they prefer stable water parameters, so regular water changes and proper filtration are important to keep them healthy.
Tank Setup: A minimum tank size of 10 gallons is recommended for a small group of Green Cory Catfish. These fish prefer soft, fine gravel or sand substrates, as their sensitive barbels can be damaged by rough or sharp gravel. Additionally, it is important to include plenty of hiding spots, such as plants, driftwood, or decorations, to reduce stress and provide refuge. Corydoras are bottom dwellers, so gentle filtration and minimal water current are ideal.
Diet: Green Cory Catfish are omnivores and scavengers, feeding on detritus, small invertebrates, and plant material in their natural habitat. In the aquarium, they are not picky eaters and will accept a wide variety of foods. High-quality sinking pellets, flakes, frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia, and occasional plant-based foods like algae wafers or blanched vegetables are all suitable. It is important to avoid overfeeding, as excess food can lead to water quality issues.

Tankmates: Green Cory Catfish are social creatures and do well in community tanks with other peaceful species. They are ideal tankmates for small, non-aggressive fish like neon tetras, rasboras, guppies, and livebearers. They can also live harmoniously with other Corydoras species, as well as peaceful invertebrates like shrimp and snails. It is important to avoid housing them with larger or aggressive fish, which may intimidate or stress them.

Breeding: Breeding Green Cory Catfish in captivity is similar to breeding other Corydoras species. These fish are egg layers, and males will chase the female to release eggs, which are then fertilized externally. The eggs can be laid on the glass, plants, or decorations. Once hatched, the fry will require fine food such as infusoria or baby brine shrimp until they grow large enough to accept other foods. A separate breeding tank with plants or mesh is recommended to protect the eggs and fry from being eaten by adult fish.
