DESCRIPTION OF ITEM:
The Albino Senegal Bichir, also known as the Albino Bichir or Albino Senegalus, is a striking and rare color variant of the Senegal Bichir (Polypterus senegalus), a type of prehistoric fish from the Polypteridae family. These fish are known for their ancient lineage, having existed for millions of years, and are often referred to as "living fossils" due to their primitive features. The Albino Senegal Bichir is especially popular in the aquarium hobby due to its unique albino coloration, which makes it an eye-catching and highly sought-after species.
1. Appearance
- Coloration: The Albino Senegal Bichir has a beautiful pale, cream to white body with a subtle pinkish or reddish tint, which gives it its albino appearance. Its fins are often translucent, with hints of light red or orange. The absence of pigmentation in the eyes is a defining feature of albino fish.
- Size: These bichirs are relatively small compared to other bichir species. They typically grow to about 10-12 inches (25-30 cm) in length, although in large aquariums with excellent care, they can grow slightly larger.
- Shape: They have an elongated body with a prehistoric appearance, featuring a series of bony, armored plates running along their back. Their head is broad, with barbels around the mouth, which help them sense their environment in low-light conditions.
2. Temperament
- Peaceful but Predatory: The Albino Senegal Bichir is generally peaceful and non-aggressive towards other fish, but it is a carnivore and will eat smaller fish or invertebrates if they fit in its mouth. This means that it’s best to house them with tankmates that are too large to be considered prey.
- They tend to be solitary, though they can be kept with other similar-sized, non-aggressive fish, especially those that occupy different areas of the tank (i.e., mid-water or surface dwellers).
3. Habitat
- Tank Size: Due to their size, an aquarium of at least 30-55 gallons (113-208 liters) is recommended for a single Albino Senegal Bichir. Larger tanks are ideal, especially if you plan to house them with other species.
- Water Conditions: The Senegal Bichir, including its albino variant, prefers slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.5-7.5), with temperatures ranging from 75-82°F (24-28°C). They also tolerate a range of water conditions, but stable water parameters are essential for their well-being.
- Substrate: A soft, sandy substrate is ideal, as they like to burrow and dig. Avoid sharp gravel, as it can injure their delicate underside. The tank should have a secure lid, as Bichirs are known to be escape artists and may jump out of the aquarium if given the opportunity.
- Filtration: A strong filtration system is recommended, as they are messy eaters and produce a considerable amount of waste. Regular water changes are crucial to maintaining water quality.
4. Diet
-
Carnivorous Diet: Albino Senegal Bichirs are primarily carnivorous. In the wild, they eat smaller fish, invertebrates, and aquatic insects. In an aquarium setting, they can be fed:
- Frozen or live foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, earthworms, and small fish.
- Sinking pellets and frozen meaty foods, like daphnia or blackworms, can also be part of their diet.
- It's important to provide them with a balanced diet that includes both protein and occasional plant matter, though their primary needs are protein-based.
5. Behavior and Care
- Active and Nocturnal: While they are generally peaceful, they are more active at night and may rest in caves or under decorations during the day. Providing plenty of hiding spaces in the form of caves, driftwood, or rocks is essential for them to feel secure.
- Lifespan: With proper care, Albino Senegal Bichirs can live for 10-15 years or longer in captivity.
- Tankmates: They can be kept with similarly sized fish such as large tetras, cichlids, or catfish. Avoid small fish, as they may be eaten. Also, consider other bottom-dwellers like catfish or large snails, but be cautious as they can sometimes outcompete them for food.
6. Breeding
- Breeding the Albino Senegal Bichir in captivity is challenging, as it requires very specific water conditions and behavior that replicate their natural spawning environments.
- These fish are egg-layers and typically breed in caves or other sheltered areas. The male fertilizes the eggs externally, and both parents may guard the nest during incubation. However, due to their nocturnal nature, breeding is rarely observed in home aquariums.
7. Considerations
- Tank Space: As they can grow up to 12 inches (30 cm), make sure to provide a spacious tank for your Albino Senegal Bichir, especially if you plan to keep other fish with them.
- Escape Risks: They are notorious for being able to jump or find escape routes, so a secure lid on the tank is essential.
- Water Quality: These fish are sensitive to water quality, so consistent maintenance of clean water through regular water changes is necessary.
