The Blue Mystery Snail (Pomacea bridgesii) is a striking and visually appealing freshwater snail variety, known for its vibrant blue or bluish-green shell. It is a color morph of the widely popular Mystery Snail, making it a beloved addition to many aquariums due to its beauty, peaceful nature, and beneficial algae-eating abilities.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Blue Mystery Snails typically grow to around 2 inches (5 cm) in diameter when fully mature, although some individuals may reach up to 3 inches (7.5 cm). This size is ideal for most aquarium setups, providing enough space to move and graze comfortably.
  • Shell: The most distinctive feature of the Blue Mystery Snail is its stunning blue shell. The shell can range from light blue to a deeper, more vibrant cobalt blue, sometimes with slight variations in shade. The shell has a smooth, glossy finish and is spiraled in a conical shape, becoming more pronounced as the snail grows. Some snails may even display a pearlescent or iridescent quality, adding to their visual appeal.
  • Body: The body of the snail is typically light beige or creamy white, providing a contrasting backdrop to the blue shell. The snail’s foot is used for locomotion, and it moves slowly and gracefully across surfaces.
  • Aperture: The aperture (opening of the shell) is large and allows the snail to retract fully into the shell when it needs protection. The snail can also extend a siphon from the aperture to breathe air when necessary.

Behavior and Temperament:

  • Peaceful and Non-Aggressive: Blue Mystery Snails, like other Mystery Snail varieties, are known for their peaceful nature. They pose no threat to tank mates and can be housed with small fish, other invertebrates, and even other snails, provided there is sufficient space. They do not exhibit aggressive behavior and prefer to spend their time moving slowly around the tank.
  • Algae Grazing: Blue Mystery Snails are excellent algae eaters and are often used in aquariums to help control algae growth. They can graze on algae on glass, plants, decorations, and the substrate, helping to keep the tank clean. In addition to algae, they also consume detritus and leftover food.
  • Slow Movement: These snails are relatively slow movers, using their muscular foot to glide across surfaces. Their movement is often smooth and deliberate, and they tend to be most active during the day, slowly exploring the tank for food.

Care Requirements:

  • Water Conditions: Blue Mystery Snails thrive in water temperatures between 72-82°F (22-28°C) and prefer slightly alkaline water with a pH around 7-8. They can tolerate soft to moderately hard water, but they do best in water with a stable pH and appropriate hardness.
  • Tank Setup: These snails are best kept in a tank that is at least 5 gallons, although larger tanks are ideal, especially if there are other snails or fish in the aquarium. The tank should include plenty of surfaces for grazing, such as plants, rocks, and decorations. It's important to provide them with a secure lid, as snails are known to occasionally climb out of the water, especially when the water level is too high.
  • Diet: Blue Mystery Snails are primarily herbivores and will consume a variety of algae, biofilm, and decaying plant matter. They can be fed supplemental foods, including algae wafers, blanched vegetables (e.g., zucchini, spinach, or lettuce), and specially formulated snail foods. They may also feed on leftover fish food, helping to clean up the tank. However, it’s essential not to overfeed them, as excess food can affect water quality.
  • Water Quality: Regular water changes (10-25% per week) are necessary to maintain good water quality. Since these snails are sensitive to copper, it’s important to avoid using any medications or treatments that contain copper, as it can be toxic to them.

Reproduction:

  • Eggs: Blue Mystery Snails reproduce by laying eggs above the waterline. The egg masses are usually pink or orange in color and can be found on tank walls, plants, or decorations. The eggs hatch in 2-3 weeks, and the baby snails fall into the water once they are ready. It's important to monitor the eggs and, if necessary, remove them to prevent overpopulation in the aquarium.

Benefits in the Aquarium:

  1. Algae Control: Blue Mystery Snails are effective at grazing on algae, particularly on glass and decorations, which helps maintain a cleaner and healthier tank environment.
  2. Cleanup Crew: In addition to algae, these snails will consume leftover fish food, detritus, and decaying organic material, helping to reduce waste and keep the tank clean.
  3. Peaceful Nature: Their gentle and non-aggressive temperament makes them suitable for most community aquariums, where they coexist peacefully with fish and other invertebrates.
  4. Visual Appeal: The blue shell of the Blue Mystery Snail adds a beautiful pop of color to the aquarium, making them a favorite among aquarium hobbyists who want to add a touch of elegance to their setup.
