Detailed Description

Sterbai Corydoras (Corydoras sterbai)
The hardy, peaceful bottom-dweller with bold patterns and boundless charm!

The Sterbai Corydoras is one of the most popular and attractive cory catfish in the hobby. Recognized by its striking white-spotted body over a dark background, orange-tinged pectoral fins, and constant wiggling motion, it’s a fun, social, and efficient cleaner for any freshwater community tank. Gentle, hardy, and incredibly entertaining, these fish are a favorite for both beginner and seasoned aquarists.

🔍 Quick Facts:

  • Common Name: Sterbai Cory, Sterba's Cory

  • Scientific Name: Corydoras sterbai

  • Origin: Bolivia & Brazil (upper Rio Guaporé basin)

  • Size: 2.5–3 inches

  • Temperament: Peaceful, social

  • Lifespan: 5–10 years

  • Care Level: Easy

🏡 Ideal Aquarium Setup:

  • Minimum Tank Size: 20 gallons

  • Temperature: 72–82°F (22–28°C) – tolerates warmer temps better than most corys

  • pH Range: 6.0–7.5

  • Water Hardness: Soft to moderate

  • Tank Tips:

    • Keep in groups of at least 4–6 to see their best behavior

    • Fine sand or smooth substrate to protect their barbels

    • Plenty of plants, driftwood, or decor for shelter

    • Low to moderate flow preferred

    • Great for peaceful community tanks (tetras, rasboras, dwarf cichlids, etc.)

🍽️ Diet:
Omnivorous bottom-feeder

  • Sinking pellets and wafers

  • Frozen or live treats like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia

  • Will scavenge leftovers but still needs a regular, protein-rich diet

🐣 Breeding Info:

  • Readily breeds in captivity with proper care

  • Spawning is triggered by cooler water changes and high-protein diets

  • Females lay adhesive eggs on tank walls or broad leaves

  • Fry can be raised on powdered fry food or baby brine shrimp

🌟 Fun Facts:

  • Unlike many corydoras, Sterbai tolerate higher tropical temperatures, making them ideal companions for warm-water species like discus

  • They communicate using clicking sounds, especially during feeding or courtship

  • Active mostly at dawn/dusk but will scavenge throughout the day

  • Known for their adorable “waddle” as they search the substrate!

💡 Pro Tip:
For best results, keep Sterbai Corys in a species group and feed them after lights out to ensure they get their share in a busy community tank.

🏆 Peaceful, pretty, and endlessly playful — the Sterbai Corydoras is a must-have for any well-balanced freshwater setup.
