Collection: Goldfish & Koi

Koi and goldfish, both captivating members of the carp family, hail from Asia and are prized for their beauty and hardiness. While sharing a common ancestry, they exhibit distinct characteristics:

  • Appearance: Koi are renowned for their robust frames, vibrant colors (red, white, black, and yellow), and striking patterns. Goldfish, conversely, display a broader spectrum of colors (orange, red, white, and multicolored) and a wider variety of body shapes, including unique features like bubble eyes and flowing fins.
  • Size: Koi are significantly larger than goldfish, reaching impressive lengths of up to 3 feet, while goldfish typically remain within a 6-inch range.
  • Distinguishing Feature: A key difference lies in the presence of barbels (whiskers) near their mouths, a feature exclusive to koi.
  • Temperament: Generally peaceful, both species can thrive in groups. However, larger koi may exhibit more dominance when sharing space with smaller fish.
  • Care: Both require clean, well-oxygenated water within a suitable temperature range. However, due to their substantial size, koi necessitate significantly larger ponds compared to goldfish.
