Neon Tetra (Paracheirodon innesi) - Live Fish
Neon Tetra (Paracheirodon innesi) - Live Fish
DESCRIPTION OF ITEM:
The Neon Tetras (Paracheirodon innesi) are beautiful and popular freshwater fish known for their vibrant colors and peaceful nature. Here's a description of Neon Tetras:
Appearance: Neon Tetras have a streamlined body with a bright iridescent blue line running horizontally from nose to adipose fin, along with a striking iridescent red stripe below it, stretching from mid-body to the base of the tail. These colors create a striking contrast against their silver body, making them one of the most visually appealing aquarium fish.
Size: Neon Tetras are relatively small, typically growing to about 1.5 inches (3.8 centimeters) in length.
Habitat: Native to the slow-moving waters of South America, Neon Tetras are found in densely vegetated streams and tributaries, where they prefer shaded areas with soft, acidic water conditions.
Behavior: These tetras are peaceful and shoaling fish, meaning they thrive in groups of 6 or more. They are social and active swimmers, spending much of their time in the middle and bottom regions of the aquarium. Neon Tetras are non-aggressive and get along well with other peaceful fish species.
Diet: Neon Tetras are omnivorous and will accept a varied diet. They primarily feed on small insects, crustaceans, and plant matter in the wild. In captivity, they should be fed high-quality flake or pellet foods supplemented with occasional treats of live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia.
Tank Requirements: Neon Tetras do best in a well-planted aquarium with subdued lighting. Provide ample swimming space along with dense vegetation and floating plants to mimic their natural habitat. The tank should be at least 10 gallons in size for a small group of Neon Tetras.
Water Parameters: Neon Tetras prefer slightly acidic to neutral water conditions with a pH range of 6.0-7.5. The water temperature should be kept between 72-78°F (22-26°C). Regular water changes are important to maintain good water quality.
Tank Mates: Neon Tetras are peaceful and should be kept with other non-aggressive species that share similar water requirements. They do well with other small community fish like other tetras, rasboras, gouramis, and small catfish species. Avoid keeping them with large or aggressive fish that may view them as prey.
Breeding: Breeding Neon Tetras in captivity can be challenging but is possible with proper conditions. Separate a pair into a small breeding tank with plenty of fine-leaved plants for egg scattering. Provide a varied diet to condition them for breeding, and the females will scatter adhesive eggs among the plants.
