DESCRIPTION OF ITEM:

The Pearl Gourami (Trichopodus leerii) is a peaceful and strikingly beautiful freshwater fish that is highly favored in aquariums for its delicate appearance, graceful swimming, and calm temperament. Native to Southeast Asia, particularly the slow-moving waters of Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam, this species is a popular choice among aquarium enthusiasts for its serene nature and stunning visual appeal.

Physical Characteristics:
Coloration: The Pearl Gourami is known for its soft, pearlescent sheen that gives it a unique, glowing appearance. The body is typically light silver or pale blue with a delicate pattern of white dots, resembling pearls, which is where the fish gets its name. These dots are more pronounced on the sides, adding a striking visual effect. The fins are usually translucent with hints of orange or red, particularly on the pelvic and anal fins. Males tend to have more vivid coloration, especially in the fins, while females are more subdued.
Size: Pearl Gouramis are relatively medium-sized fish, typically growing to about 3.5 to 4 inches (9-10 cm) in length. Their small to medium size makes them suitable for most community aquariums.
Shape: They have a slender, elongated body with a slightly compressed shape, which contributes to their graceful swimming. Their long, flowing fins, particularly the anal and pectoral fins, further enhance their elegant movements in the water.

Behavior:
Temperament: Pearl Gouramis are peaceful and calm, making them an ideal addition to community tanks. They are generally non-aggressive and get along well with other peaceful species. However, like many gouramis, they may display some territorial behavior, particularly males, when it comes to defending their space or during mating displays. They do best when kept in groups, though they can also do well as pairs. They may not be as active as some other fish, preferring to swim slowly and gracefully around the tank.

Habitat and Tank Requirements:
Water Conditions: Pearl Gouramis prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5, and temperatures between 75°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C). They are relatively adaptable to different water conditions but thrive in stable, well-maintained aquariums. A well-planted tank with plenty of floating plants or surface cover will make them feel more secure. Gouramis also have a labyrinth organ, which allows them to breathe air from the water's surface, so it's important to provide access to the surface for occasional air intake.
Diet: As omnivores, Pearl Gouramis will accept a variety of foods, including high-quality flake food, pellets, live foods (like brine shrimp or bloodworms), and plant matter. They enjoy eating both plant-based foods and protein-rich foods, so a varied diet is essential for maintaining their health and vibrant colors.
Tankmates: Pearl Gouramis are peaceful and generally do well with other calm, non-aggressive species. They can be housed with a variety of other freshwater fish, such as tetras, rasboras, danios, and other peaceful community fish. However, they should not be kept with overly aggressive species that might stress them. Also, they tend to do well in aquariums with lots of plants, which can provide hiding spots and areas for them to explore.

Breeding: Breeding Pearl Gouramis in captivity is possible, though it may require some patience. Males build bubble nests on the surface of the water, which they use to attract females. The female will then lay eggs in the nest, which the male fertilizes and guards. After spawning, it is typically recommended to remove the female to protect her from the male’s territorial behavior. The eggs hatch in a few days, and the fry are cared for by the male until they are free-swimming.

Pearl Gouramis are a graceful and peaceful addition to any community tank. Their stunning pearlescent appearance, gentle temperament, and ease of care make them an ideal choice for aquarists looking for a visually striking, low-maintenance fish. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced fishkeeper, the Pearl Gourami's calm nature and striking beauty will enhance the tranquility and aesthetic appeal of your aquarium. Their adaptability to various water conditions and compatibility with other peaceful species makes them a wonderful addition to most freshwater setups.
