Barb Denisonii-Tropical Fish
Barb Denisonii-Tropical Fish
The Denison Barb (Sahyadria denisonii), also known as the Roseline Shark or Red-Line Torpedo Barb, is a stunning and energetic freshwater fish highly prized in the aquarium trade. Native to fast-flowing rivers and streams of the Western Ghats in India, this species is known for its sleek, torpedo-shaped body and striking coloration.
Denison Barbs have a silver body with a bold red stripe running from their snout through the eye, extending halfway down the body. Below this, a black horizontal stripe runs from the nose to the tail. The caudal fin is adorned with yellow and black markings, adding to their visual appeal. Their vibrant colors become even more intense in well-maintained aquariums. They can grow up to 6 inches (15 cm) in length, making them one of the larger barb species.
These fish are active, social, and peaceful, best suited for community tanks with other fast-moving, non-aggressive fish. They are schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least 5 or more to prevent stress and encourage natural behaviors. When kept alone or in small numbers, they can become skittish or aggressive. Due to their speed and active swimming habits, they require a large aquarium of at least 55 gallons with plenty of open swimming space and good filtration to replicate their natural riverine habitat.
Denison Barbs thrive in water temperatures between 65–77°F (18–25°C) with a pH of 6.5–7.8 and moderate to high oxygenation. They appreciate a well-planted tank with smooth rocks, driftwood, and strong water flow. As omnivores, they require a varied diet of high-quality pellets, flakes, live, and frozen foods like bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp to maintain their health and vibrant coloration.
Although beautiful and relatively hardy, Denison Barbs require a spacious, well-maintained tank and are best suited for experienced aquarists. Due to habitat destruction and overcollection in the wild, they are now classified as "Endangered" in the IUCN Red List, making it important to source them from responsible breeders. Their striking appearance and energetic nature make them a captivating addition to large, well-managed aquariums.
