The Rosy Neon Barb (Pethia conchonius), often referred to as the Neon Rosy Barb, is a colorful and hardy freshwater fish popular among aquarium enthusiasts. This selectively bred variant of the Rosy Barb exhibits enhanced neon-like hues, making it a striking addition to community tanks.
Rosy Neon Barbs have a shimmering pinkish-red body with an iridescent glow, giving them their "neon" appearance. Their fins often display hints of orange or red, with males typically being more vibrant than females. When fully grown, they reach a size of around 2.5–3 inches (6–7.5 cm), making them a great choice for medium-sized aquariums.
These fish are peaceful, active, and social, thriving in groups of at least 5–6. They are best kept in a 20-gallon or larger tank with plenty of open swimming space and a well-planted environment. While they generally get along with other peaceful species, they can sometimes exhibit mild fin-nipping behavior, so it's best to avoid slow-moving or long-finned tank mates. Ideal companions include danios, rasboras, tetras, and other barbs.
Rosy Neon Barbs prefer water temperatures between 64–75°F (18–24°C), a pH range of 6.0–7.5, and moderate water hardness. They are omnivores and enjoy a varied diet of high-quality flakes, pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia to maintain their vibrant coloration.
Hardy and easy to care for, Rosy Neon Barbs are an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced aquarists. Their energetic schooling behavior and brilliant colors make them a lively and eye-catching addition to a well-maintained community aquarium.
