DESCRIPTION OF ITEM:

The Bloodfin Tetra (Aphyocharax anisitsi) is a small, striking species of tetra that is a popular choice among aquarium enthusiasts. Native to South America, particularly in the Paraguay River basin and surrounding areas in Brazil and Argentina, the Bloodfin Tetra is appreciated for its peaceful nature and vibrant coloration.

Physical Description:

  • Size: The average size is around 1.5 to 2 inches (4 to 5 cm) in length, making it a relatively small fish.
  • Coloration: As the name suggests, the Bloodfin Tetra has a characteristic red coloration in its fins, especially the tail and dorsal fins, which stand out against its silver body. This bright red color is a key feature and adds to the fish’s appeal.
  • Lifespan: With proper care, they can live between 3 to 5 years.

Behavior and Social Needs:

  • Temperament: Bloodfin Tetras are peaceful and social. They are excellent community fish that get along with a wide variety of other peaceful species, making them ideal for community tanks.
  • Schooling: These tetras prefer to be kept in groups, ideally of 6 or more individuals, as they feel more secure when schooling together.
  • Activity Level: They are relatively active fish, spending much of their time swimming in the middle to upper levels of the tank.

Habitat and Water Conditions:

  • Water Parameters: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water conditions (pH 6.0–7.5), with a temperature range of 72°F to 79°F (22°C to 26°C), and a moderate water hardness of 6 to 15 dGH.
  • Tank Setup: A well-planted aquarium with plenty of swimming space is ideal for these fish. They appreciate having plants, rocks, and driftwood to hide in, but they should still have plenty of room to move freely.

Diet:

  • Omnivorous: Bloodfin Tetras are opportunistic feeders and will accept a wide variety of foods, including high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen foods like brine shrimp or bloodworms, and live foods.
  • Vegetable Matter: They also benefit from occasional plant-based food, such as spirulina or blanched vegetables.

Breeding:

  • Bloodfin Tetras are egg scatterers. They typically spawn in a well-maintained tank with plants or spawning mops where the eggs can adhere. The eggs will hatch in about 24-48 hours depending on water temperature.
  • It's best to remove the parents after spawning, as they may consume the eggs. The fry will begin to swim freely a few days after hatching and should be fed infusoria or liquid fry food until they are large enough to eat more traditional foods.

Care Tips:

  • Tankmates: Due to their peaceful nature, they do well with other small, non-aggressive fish. Examples include other tetras, rasboras, guppies, and Corydoras catfish.
  • Water Quality: As with all fish, maintaining high water quality with proper filtration and regular water changes is crucial for their well-being.
  • Lighting: They do best in moderate lighting and appreciate floating plants or shady spots to feel secure.

Summary:

Bloodfin Tetras are beautiful, hardy, and easy-to-care-for fish that can add a splash of color to any aquarium. They thrive in schools and make excellent additions to peaceful community tanks, provided their water conditions and diet are well-maintained.
