The Pinktail Chalceus (Chalceus macrolepidotus) is a sleek, torpedo-shaped freshwater fish known for its striking metallic sheen and distinctive pink tail. Native to the fast-moving rivers and streams of South America, this species is an energetic swimmer that adds dynamic movement to large aquariums.

With a silvery, iridescent body and hints of gold or green along its scales, the Pinktail Chalceus stands out in any setup. Its deep pink to reddish tail fin provides a beautiful contrast, making it a visually captivating species. Growing up to 10 inches, this fish requires a spacious aquarium of at least 75 gallons with ample swimming space.

Despite its predatory nature, the Pinktail Chalceus is generally peaceful but can be skittish and aggressive toward smaller fish that fit in its mouth. It thrives in groups of three or more to reduce stress and displays its best coloration when kept in a well-maintained environment with moderate to strong water flow.

This species prefers soft to slightly acidic water (pH 6.0–7.5) and a temperature range of 75–82°F. It is a carnivorous fish, feeding on insects, small fish, and crustaceans in the wild. In captivity, a diet of high-quality pellets, flakes, frozen, and live foods like mealworms and shrimp helps maintain its health and vibrancy.

With proper care, the Pinktail Chalceus is a hardy and rewarding addition to large aquariums, bringing both elegance and energy to the aquatic environment.
