The Gold Algae Eater is a vibrant, eye-catching variant of the Chinese Algae Eater, bred for its striking golden-yellow coloration. With a streamlined body and a specialized sucker mouth, this fish is excellent at clinging to surfaces and munching away at soft algae—making it both functional and beautiful.

While peaceful when young, Gold Algae Eaters can become territorial as they mature, especially in smaller tanks. It's best to keep them in larger, well-decorated aquariums with hiding spaces and fast-moving tankmates that can hold their own.

Fun Facts:

  • Despite the name, this species is not actually from China! It was first discovered in the Mekong region.

  • In the wild, Gyrinocheilus aymonieri can live in fast-flowing rivers—its mouth has evolved to help it grip rocks and feed in strong currents.

  • Known for their efficiency, they’ll often clean glass, décor, and plants of algae in hard-to-reach spots.

  • Their eye-catching golden variant was selectively bred for the aquarium trade.

Diet:
Primarily herbivorous—enjoys algae wafers, blanched vegetables (like zucchini or spinach), and occasional protein-based foods like bloodworms.

Compatibility:
Best with fast or similarly sized fish. Avoid housing with slow or long-finned species (like fancy guppies or bettas). Can be kept singly or in larger groups if tank size allows.

Add a flash of gold and a hardworking algae-control specialist to your tank!
The Gold Algae Eater is a favorite among aquarists for its beauty, energy, and tank-cleaning abilities.
