Root - Fern Java
Root - Fern Java
Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus) is a hardy and versatile freshwater aquarium plant, widely appreciated for its lush green, sword-shaped leaves and ease of care. Native to Southeast Asia, this plant thrives in a variety of aquarium setups, making it a popular choice for aquarists of all skill levels. Its leaves can grow up to 13 inches long, creating a striking focal point in the midground or background of aquascapes.
Java Fern grows best when attached to hardscape elements like driftwood or rocks, as burying its rhizome in the substrate can cause rot. It flourishes in low to moderate lighting and requires no CO₂ supplementation, making it ideal for low-tech tanks. This plant tolerates a wide range of water conditions, with optimal temperatures between 68°F–82°F and a pH of 6.0–7.5.
A slow grower, Java Fern is low-maintenance and rarely consumed by herbivorous fish, making it a resilient choice for community tanks. Its intricate leaf structure also provides shelter and spawning sites for fish and shrimp. With its adaptability and striking appearance, Java Fern adds a natural and elegant touch to any freshwater aquarium.
