The Tiretrack Spiny Eel is a striking and intelligent oddball species known for the dark, maze-like markings along its elongated body that resemble tire tracks. Despite its eel-like appearance, it's actually part of a unique group of freshwater fish with small dorsal spines—hence the name "spiny eel."
These fascinating bottom-dwellers are nocturnal, often hiding during the day under rocks, driftwood, or inside PVC tubes. At night, they become active, foraging along the substrate or exploring their environment. With proper care and a secure tank setup, Tiretrack Eels can become interactive and even recognize their keepers over time.
Fun Facts:
-
Despite their appearance, they’re not true eels—they belong to the Mastacembelidae family.
-
They are excellent escape artists—tight-fitting lids are a must!
-
Can live over 10 years with proper care and tank conditions.
-
Known to show surprising intelligence and even hand-feed with patience.
Diet:
Carnivorous—prefers live or frozen foods like bloodworms, blackworms, brine shrimp, and chopped earthworms. May accept sinking carnivore pellets once acclimated.
Compatibility:
Best kept with larger, peaceful fish. May eat small tankmates if they fit in its mouth. Avoid overly aggressive species that might outcompete it for food or stress it out.
